MCN: Bridge Builders for Vulnerable Migrant Populations in the U.S.

Kim Nolte Honored on TIME100 Health List

In 2023, a record number of migrants arrived at the U.S. southern border, many of them malnourished and ill. With more than 1,700 migrants accessing healthcare through their services the previous year, the Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) headquartered in Austin played a critical role in providing medical care to those in urgent need.

Kim Nolte, CEO of MCN emphasized the importance of prenatal care in reducing healthcare costs and minimizing risks for both the mother and baby. Newly arrived migrants often struggle to navigate the healthcare system, with many lacking knowledge of how to seek medical attention. Trust issues and concerns about immigration status can also deter individuals from seeking care. Distance from federally-funded health centers, which offer full subsidies for visits, poses a challenge for some migrants. Language barriers and financial constraints further hinder access to healthcare for this population.

Under Nolte’s leadership, MCN serves as a strong advocate for migrants seeking healthcare. They provide triage services at immigration shelters, help schedule medical appointments, and continue to support asylum seekers as they progress through their immigration journey. The organization is dedicated to bridging the gap in healthcare access for vulnerable migrant populations and ensuring they receive the support they need during their time in the U.S.
