Medicaid Managed-Care System: Five Health Plans Selected to Receive Tens of Billions of Dollars in Contracts

AHCA chooses five managed care health plans for Medicare program participation

The state Agency for Health Care Administration has announced plans to award contracts to five health plans to participate in the Medicaid managed-care program. This is a significant move as it involves tens of billions of dollars in the coming years, with about 3.45 million people receiving health care through the managed-care system as of February, according to data posted on the agency’s website.

The five health plans selected are Florida Community Care, LLC; Humana Medical Plan, Inc.; Simply Healthcare Plans, Inc.; South Florida Community Care Network, LLC operating as Community Care Plan; and Sunshine State Health Plan, Inc. According to a document on the agency’s website, Humana, Simply Healthcare, and Sunshine State Health Plan will receive statewide contracts, while the other two plans will receive contracts in specific regions of the state.

The contracting process has been ongoing for the past year. Eleven plans responded to an “invitation to negotiate” to vie for contracts. The agency is obliged to undergo a procurement process for the contracts every six years. Plans that do not receive contracts are able to file challenges.
