Medical Facility Under Fire: The Israeli Army’s Operations at Gaza Strip’s al-Shifa Hospital Raise International Concerns

Israel’s “completed operation” update: IDF withdraws from al-Shifa hospital in Gaza

On Monday, the Israeli army announced that they had completed their operations in the area of the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza Strip. Two weeks prior to this announcement, they had entered the hospital causing international outrage. The army stated that they had killed terrorists during clashes in the area.

The WHO stated that 21 patients had died since the start of the Israeli operation, with many displaced people seeking refuge at the hospital. Concerns were raised about the findings of bodies at the hospital compound, prompting the White House to express worry and seek additional information from the Israeli government. Reports from eyewitnesses described scenes of destruction and bodies left abandoned around the hospital.

After Hamas leaders believed that Israel had completed its activity at al-Shifa Hospital in mid-November, they quickly organized a second raid, resulting in over 6,000 civilians being evacuated. The IDF and Shin Bet forces left the area on Sunday following a second raid that began on March 18th. International law dictates that a medical facility loses its protected status if it is used for military purposes.
