Just three weeks before the divorce was finalized in 2021, French Gates purchased a cottage in Seattle, which has become her new home. Although she did not disclose the exact neighborhood where she now resides, French Gates described her current living situation as being able to walk to nearby stores, restaurants, and other amenities. This marks a significant change from the extravagant Xanadu 2.0 estate in the Medina suburb of Seattle, which was her former residence with Bill Gates.
French Gates never felt completely comfortable in the expansive Xanadu 2.0, with its large swimming pool, numerous bathrooms, and massive library. She expressed a preference for a simpler lifestyle, with the ability to walk to local establishments and enjoy a more low-key environment with neighbors who are not tech titans like her ex-husband.
In May, French Gates stepped down from her position as cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to focus on the next phase of her philanthropic work. Her resignation became effective on June 7 as she looked forward to continuing her efforts to give back to those in need while embracing this new chapter in her life.
