Meta’s Metaverse Empire: Balancing Growth and Regulation in the Digital Age

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has suspended its Threads micromessaging application in Turkey since Monday following a provisional decision by the country’s Competition Authority. The suspension was due to concerns about unfair competition and Meta’s dominant position in the market.

The decision prohibits the exchange of data between Instagram and Threads, as competition believes that this information allows Meta to gather details about users on both platforms for targeted advertising. In mid-April, Meta was ordered not to share this data and was fined for failing to provide transparent information in notification messages about data sharing between its platforms.

Meta stated that it is currently negotiating with Turkish authorities to lift the suspension of Threads. Meanwhile, other Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp continue to operate without any issues.
