Michigan Business Leaders Remain Optimistic Despite Historic Pandemic Challenges

Small Business is Thriving in Michigan: The Vital Role of Local Enterprises in the Great Lakes State

The recent historic 100-year health pandemic has affected every business in one way or another. Despite the challenges, businesses across Michigan are feeling optimistic about the future. This sentiment was echoed during a conversation on CBS Detroit’s Michigan Matters featuring Quentin Messer, Jr., CEO of Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Chris Holman, CEO of Michigan Business Network, and Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett.

Messer discussed the 27 organizations recently selected to serve as entrepreneurial hubs as a result of the passage of the $75 million Small Business Smart Zones and Business Accelerator initiative. These hubs assist businesses looking to expand or relocate to Michigan.

Holman conducted a statewide poll of hundreds of Michigan businesses and found that talent acquisition was the top issue they raised concerns about. However, despite these challenges, businesses expressed their positive outlook for the future and were pleased to be located in Michigan.

Barnett highlighted Rochester Hills’ expertise in manufacturing robotics and its continued growth. He also mentioned the success of Oakland University Golden Grizzlers men’s basketball team in the NCAA Tournament, leading to an increase in sales of school merchandise.

CBS Detroit’s Michigan Matters airs at its new time on Sundays at 5:30 am on CBS Detroit and noon on Detroit 50 WKBD. The show streams at 9 pm weeknights on CBS Detroit’s website, app, and Pluto TV. Carol Cain, a 13-time Emmy-winning senior producer and host of Michigan Matters, leads the conversation.
