Mozambique’s Future Leader Tackles Challenges in Natural Gas Export Project

Mozambique Gears Up to Revamp Economy through Gas Reserves with New Leader at the Helm – Firstpost

Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, is making efforts to revitalize a major natural gas export project and transform its economy. The ruling party, Frelimo, has selected Daniel Chapo as its candidate for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for October. Despite never holding a national government position, he was chosen by Frelimo as its presidential nominee after President Filipe Nyusi was unable to appoint Roque Silva, the secretary general of Frelimo, as his successor.

Chapo faces challenges in his new role, especially in the context of the natural gas export project. In 2021, work on the project was halted due to attacks by rebels affiliated with the Islamic State in the Cabo Delgado province. While progress has been made in pushing back the militants with the help of neighboring countries and Rwandan troops, intermittent attacks still pose a threat.

French prosecutors are also investigating allegations of involuntary manslaughter related to the project, accusing TotalEnergies of failing to adequately protect its subcontractors. The company denies any wrongdoing, but concerns remain among the project’s supporters. President Nyusi has expressed frustration over the delays in accessing Mozambique’s vast gas reserves.

As the chosen presidential candidate, Chapo will be tasked with addressing concerns about safety and security in doing business in Mozambique. It remains to be seen how he will navigate these challenges and lead the country towards economic growth and development.
