New Blood in the Health Department: Meet Dr. Herbie Duber, San Juan County’s Acting Health Officer

Dr. Herbie Duber has been appointed as the acting Health Officer for San Juan County, Washington. Currently serving as the Regional Medical Officer for Northwest Washington with the Washington State Department of Health, Dr. Duber plays a vital role in developing healthcare policies and programs across the state while acting as a liaison between local public health agencies in Northwest WA and the Department of Health.

Councilmember Cindy Wolf expressed confidence in Dr. Duber’s appointment, citing his extensive medical experience and positive contributions at the Board of Health. As the Health Officer, he will collaborate with local organizations such as schools and medical centers to promote the health and safety of county residents through outreach programs and health education.

Dr. Duber will serve as the acting Health Officer while the county embarks on a search for a permanent replacement. The Council Chair, Jane Fuller, commended Dr. Duber’s willingness to take on the interim position and approved his appointment. The outgoing Health Officer, Dr. Frank James, recently announced his resignation after 31 years of dedicated service. His last day in office will be April 20, and the county plans to recognize his years of service in the future.

As an expert in healthcare policy development, Dr. Duber’s appointment is expected to bring new ideas and fresh perspectives to San Juan County’s healthcare system. With a wealth of experience under his belt, he will be able to hit the ground running and make meaningful contributions right away.

“Dr. Duber is an excellent choice for this important role,” said Councilmember Wolf.”His expertise and experience will undoubtedly benefit our community.”

The council believes that Dr. Duber’s skills set will enable him to excel in this position while they continue their search for a permanent replacement.

“We are grateful for Dr. Duber’s willingness to step into this critical role during this time of transition,” said Council Chair Fuller.”We are confident that he will do an excellent job.”
