New Era for Boys Volleyball: MSHSL Board Finalizes Dates and Policies for Inaugural Season

Minnesota Announces Dates for Inaugural High School Boys Volleyball Season

The Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors has recently finalized the dates for the upcoming boys volleyball season. The first officially sanctioned season is set to begin on March 17, 2025, with the state tournament scheduled for June 9-13. A total of 85 teams are registered to compete in the inaugural season.

Boys volleyball was officially approved as a sport by the MSHSL Representative Assembly in May 2023. Currently classified as an “emerging sport”, it is being guided by the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association. In 2023, the sport had 72 teams representing 78 schools. The new season is expected to bring even more participation and growth to boys volleyball across the state.

In addition to approving the boys volleyball season, the board also finalized the Sunset Policy draft. This policy lays out a process for determining the future of sports and activities with fewer than 32 participating teams. It offers various options for either continuing or discontinuing these programs based on participation levels.

The board also discussed potential changes to the seeding process for the boys and girls basketball as well as the boys and girls hockey state tournaments. Proposals have been considered that would seed all teams 1 through 8 for the quarterfinals in each tournament. This marks a shift from the current method of seeding teams 1 through 5 and randomly drawing the final three teams. These changes aim to create a more competitive and fair environment for all teams participating in the state tournaments.
