In his recent address to the county, Bill Rivenbark, chairman of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the community’s appeal for both business and leisure. Looking back on the past year, Rivenbark emphasized the achievements that have shaped the area. These accomplishments spanned across various areas including business development, education, workforce housing, public safety, health care, and environmental stewardship.

Rivenbark specifically mentioned the county’s successful partnerships with organizations such as Wilmington Business Development and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce which have resulted in significant investments from businesses along the U.S. 421 corridor. Projects such as the Wilmington Trade Center and Kessebohmer’s new headquarters were cited as examples of ongoing growth in the region.

The chairman also discussed the importance of workforce housing and highlighted New Hanover County’s $15 million investment over five years to address this issue. Additionally, he addressed recent challenges faced by the school system like a $20 million budget shortfall but expressed confidence in its commitment to education through initiatives and investments such as infrastructure improvements, pre-K programs, school nurses and resource officers.
