New Health Officer Brings Fresh Perspective and Emphasis on Community Education to Allegan County

Allegan County Board Appoints Jacqueline Billette as New Health Officer

Allegan County has appointed Jacqueline Billette as its new health officer. Billette, who is originally from the Traverse City area, comes to the position from the Central Michigan District Health Department, where she served six counties in Michigan.

Billette holds a master’s degree in public health, as well as bachelor’s degrees in English and public health. During her interview with commissioners, she emphasized the importance of community education and relationship-building in public health initiatives. She believes that education is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding their own health and lifestyle.

The former health officer, Angelique Joynes, resigned in January after serving for a decade. The county received over 20 applicants for the position and conducted interviews with five or six candidates. The selection process was thorough and involved multiple rounds of questions, including scenarios related to public health issues. Commissioner Dean Kapenga praised the appointment of Billette to the position and expressed his satisfaction with the process.

Billette’s appointment is pending final approval from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in accordance with state law. However, County Administrator Rob Sarro expects a quick approval process and anticipates that Billette will start her new role as early as Monday, April 29. The county kept the state informed throughout the hiring process.

The selection of Jacqueline Billette as the new health officer of Allegan County reflects a diligent and careful hiring process led by county officials and demonstrates a commitment to promoting public health in the community.
