New Jersey Law Brings LGBTQ+ Certification Program to Life, Boosting Representation in the Business World

LGBTQ+ Businesses in New Jersey Eligible for Official Certification

Governor Phil Murphy recently signed a new bill into law that solidifies the certification program for LGBTQ+-owned businesses, opening up local contracting opportunities and making them eligible for state agency initiatives. This legislation builds upon an executive order signed by Murphy in 2022, which aimed to promote inclusive healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community through the establishment of an LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus.

The center aims to provide comprehensive care tailored to the specific needs of LGBTQ+ individuals, emphasizing the importance of inclusive healthcare for this community. Dr. Chris Awwad, who discussed the center with us, highlighted its significance in promoting health and wellness for LGBTQ+ individuals who may face unique challenges due to discrimination or lack of access to care.

Meanwhile, the NJ Pride Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Director, Gus Penaranda, highlighted the significance of this law in sending a message of inclusivity to businesses looking to invest in New Jersey. The state’s existing certification programs for women, minorities, and veterans have already proven successful in connecting certified businesses with contracting opportunities.

By requiring businesses to meet specific criteria, such as being solely or majority-owned by LGBTQ+ individuals who are actively involved in the company, the certification program aims to boost LGBTQ+ representation in the business world. This effort aligns with the federal government’s recognition of the significant economic contributions made by LGBTQ+-owned businesses.

Overall, this legislation is a step towards creating an environment that encourages LGBTQ+ businesses to thrive in New Jersey, ultimately promoting diversity and economic growth in the state.
