New York Yankees’ 2024 Opening Day Roster: Filling In For Key Injuries and Strengthening the Bench

Yankees unveil 26-man roster for 2024 MLB Opening Day

The start of the 2024 season for the New York Yankees is finally here, marking a new chapter in their storied history. The team will open up against the Houston Astros and all eyes are on who will make it onto the 26-man roster to kick things off.

There have been some changes to the projected roster due to injuries to key players like Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza. However, manager Aaron Boone remains confident in the players who performed well in spring training and a late addition to strengthen the bench depth.

Let’s take a closer look at the complete Yankees Opening Day roster for the 2024 season.

The starting lineup has seen only a few changes, with DJ LeMahieu sidelined due to a foot injury. Berti was acquired from the Miami Marlins and is expected to fill in at third base during LeMahieu’s absence. The rest of the starting lineup remains mostly unchanged.

On the bench, there were initially plans to carry three catchers but that plan fell through when Ben Rortvedt was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. Now, Wells will be filling in as backup catcher behind Trevino. Cabrera has also been signed on as backup support for Rizzo at first base and can also play in the outfield if needed.

In terms of rotation, Gerrit Cole’s absence has opened up a spot for Gil who has earned his place as fifth starter after his impressive performance during spring training. His performance will be closely monitored once Cole returns from injury. Cortes will be taking on his role as Opening Day starter and looking forward to having another strong year along with Rodon in tow.

Finally, Weaver will be starting off in relief due to Gil’s move into rotation duties. The bullpen is crucial this season as they provide much-needed support for our starting pitchers throughout their journey towards success.

Overall, Aaron Boone seems confident that his team is ready for what lies ahead on this highly anticipated Opening Day against Houston Astros
