Newlab at Michigan Central: A Beacon of Hope and Innovation in Detroit’s Revitalization Story

Newlab transforms Detroit’s tech and entrepreneurial scene

Newlab at Michigan Central, located in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood next to the Ford train station, opened its doors in April 2023. This facility represents the story of revitalization and transformation taking place in Detroit. It was constructed from a crumbling book depository and is now home to 90 startups spanning various industries, such as EV off-road vehicles and smart wheels designed for warehouse logistics streamlining.

The CEO of Newlab, Cameron Lawrence, emphasizes that the facility assists entrepreneurs in reducing the development cycle time of their products. In an interview with One Detroit Producer Will Glover, Lawrence discusses the efforts being made to establish Detroit as a hub for technology and innovation.

Newlab has become a symbol of hope for entrepreneurs looking to bring their ideas to life in a city undergoing rapid changes. With its state-of-the-art facilities and resources available to startups across various industries, this new addition to Michigan Central serves as a reminder that anything is possible when you have the right tools and support.

In an interview with One Detroit Producer Will Glover, Lawrence emphasized how Newlab helps entrepreneurs reduce their development cycle time by providing them with access to funding opportunities and mentorship programs from experienced industry leaders.

“Our goal is not just to provide space but also resources,” said Lawrence. “We want our startups to succeed by connecting them with investors who share their vision.”

Newlab’s location within one of the most significant revitalization projects happening in Michigan has given it an added advantage over other incubators in the area.

“Being located next door to the Ford train station means we have direct access to talent coming out of college or leaving corporate jobs,” said Lawrence.

Aside from its prime location and supportive environment for startups, Newlab also hosts events aimed at promoting innovation within the tech industry.

“We host workshops that teach people about new technologies like blockchain or AI,” said Lawrence.
