Norwegian Community Stands United in Support of Rape Victims Following Bergen Gang Rape Acquittal

After mass rape, thousands protest in Norway declaring: “Society is finally awake”

In Norway, rape victims are receiving strong support following the acquittal of the suspects in the Bergen gang rape case. Thousands of people across the country have shown their solidarity with rape victims by participating in demonstrations. In Bergen, 2,000 people gathered to show their support, while a similar demonstration was held in Kristiansand. The protesters filled Festplassen in central Bergen with signs of solidarity for the rape victims.

Liselinn Woll Kampenes, one of the organizers of the Bergen demonstration, mentioned that society has been awakened to the issue of sexual violence, and these demonstrations aim to support all rape victims, not just those involved in the gang rape case. Further demonstrations are planned in Oslo, Stavanger, Trondheim, and even in smaller towns like Harstad in northern Norway.

The Bergen gang rape case involved three men accused of raping a 20-year-old woman in January 2021. Despite previous convictions in the district court, the Court of Appeal acquitted all men of the charges. While two of the men were ordered to pay compensation to the woman, the case has received widespread attention in Norway.
