Rising ocean temperatures are becoming a significant concern for scientists and researchers as they warn of the potential consequences of climate change. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Service has recently released data revealing that global heating is causing massive overheating in the world’s oceans, breaking temperature records every day over the past year.
The oceans play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing a quarter of the carbon dioxide produced by humans and around 90% of the planet’s excess heat. However, new research suggests that the oceans are struggling to keep up with this burden. A study in the journal Nature Climate Change identified human-caused climate change as driving increases in the sea surface temperature’s seasonal cycle amplitude.
Professor Mike Meredith from the British Antarctic Survey expressed great concern over this trend, noting that it could have severe consequences if it continues. Rising ocean heat content is not only worrying because of its environmental impact but also because it contributes to destabilizing ice shelves and increasing the strength of hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
