Ocean Water Safety: Avoiding Contaminated Waters in California after Weekend Storm

Rain Advisory Issued by San Luis Obispo Public Health Department for This Weekend

In California, the County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department has issued a warning to citizens to avoid ocean water during and immediately after the recent storm over the weekend. Rainwater runoff carries high levels of bacteria and harmful materials from watersheds and urban areas into the ocean, which can lead to skin, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues. Those with compromised immune systems, children, and older adults are particularly at risk.

Surfers and swimmers are advised to steer clear of ocean water and other bodies of water that flow into the ocean during this time. For more information on beach water quality, you can visit the Surf Safe SLO website or call the Ocean Water Monitoring Program Telephone Hotline at 805-788-3411.
