Paris Games to offer prize money for Track and Field events

Paris will be hosting the 2024 Olympics, marking the first time the city has hosted since 1924. As part of a double award with Los Angeles, which will host in 2028, the decision to award Paris the Olympics was made in 2017. The competition venues for the Paris 2024 Olympics will include iconic Parisian landmarks, adding to the allure of the event.

In a pivotal moment for athletics, World Athletics has announced that gold medalists at the Paris Olympics will receive $50,000 each. This marks the first time international prize money will be awarded at the Olympic Games for track and field events. In total, $2.4 million will be allocated to pay gold medalists across the 48 track and field events at the games. Relay teams will also be awarded $50,000 to split amongst their members.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe emphasized that this move is an important step towards empowering athletes and recognizing their role in the success of the Olympic Games. The introduction of prize money for Olympic medalists is part of a journey that began in 2015 and comes from revenue share allocations received by World Athletics every four years from International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athletes must pass anti-doping procedures before they can receive any prize money.

In contrast, American athletes are not split among relay teams or groups like they are in Europe’s top sports federation meetups; instead, they receive $37,500 for each gold medal won during an Olympic Games or Paralympics contest. Silver medalists are awarded $22,500 while bronze medalists get $15,
