The Phillies made two trades in the offseason, one with the Dodgers and one with the White Sox. In exchange for Connor Brogdon, the Phillies received Benony Robles, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic. Robles had a solid performance at High A in the Dodgers’ system last season, with a 3.86 ERA, 12 saves and 53 strikeouts. He was signed by the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 2017.
The Phillies designated Brogdon for assignment after a rough outing, allowing seven runs in just two innings. With shaky results and limited minor-league options, the Phillies decided to trade him to the Dodgers in exchange for Robles. Brogdon was once a productive reliever but has struggled to recapture his form recently.
The other trade the Phillies made was with the White Sox, where they sent cash to acquire minor-league infielder Jose Rodriguez. Rodriguez hit 21 home runs last season at Double A and Triple A and got into one game in the majors as a pinch-runner. He will report to Double A Reading to continue his development.
