A group of Pitt alumni has decided to fund the dismantling of the Life Sciences Building and its replacement with a humanities building. The new Life Sciences Building has faced challenges from the beginning, including funding issues that delayed the project’s start and completion.
The project does not yet have a confirmed start date, but plans for the complete renovation of the campus are in the works for the future. The goal of the funders is to reject modern architecture and opt for a more traditional and aesthetically pleasing design.
Most of the project’s funders have chosen to remain anonymous, but one member, Hugh Mungus, has come forward with a statement. Mungus expressed his belief that a science building was unnecessary and criticized the new building’s design as ugly. The Pitt-Greensburg police are currently looking for Mungus due to multiple parking violations.
The estimated cost of dismantling the life science building and replacing it has not yet been determined, but experts suggest it could range from $10 to 15 million. The main funder, who prefers to stay anonymous, stated their desire to continue funding campus renovations in the future and expressed a preference for more classical architecture.
