Premier League Announces Introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology for 2024-25 Season

Premier League Teams Vote to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology for 2024-25 Season

The Premier League has announced that it will use semi-automated technology to help determine offside calls for the 2024-25 season. In a statement released on Thursday, clubs voted unanimously to approve the change, with implementation expected after one of the fall international breaks.

This technology will enhance the in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans, as stated in the announcement. The introduction of semi-automated technology follows its successful deployment at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, viewed as a natural extension of existing VAR technology.

The system employs cameras positioned on the stadium’s roof to track the ball and 29 different data points of each player, including limbs and extremities, calculating their precise position on the field. Assistant referees will wear an earpiece through which they will receive instructions from the technology of any offside violation detected, enabling them to immediately raise their flag to alert officials and halt play. The Premier League plans to maintain the manual VAR system as a backup measure, particularly in cases where players are tightly grouped, making it challenging for the semi-automated technology to provide a clear read on the situation.

The 2024-25 Premier League season is scheduled to commence on August 17, concluding on May 25. The current season is set to end on May 19.
