Premier League Embraces AI-based Player Tracking Technology for Faster and More Accurate Offside Calls

Premier League to implement semi-automated offside technology starting next season

The Premier League has announced that it will be introducing AI-based player tracking technology to assist with offside calls next season. This move is expected to significantly reduce the time it takes officials to make decisions regarding offside calls, making the game more efficient and enjoyable for fans. England’s top-division clubs have unanimously agreed to introduce semi-automated offside technology, with plans for the system to be launched during the first half of the season.

The new technology will use optical player tracking to provide a quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line. It will also enhance the in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans by producing high-quality graphics. Semi-automated offside technology was first used at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, utilizing a sensor in the ball to track acceleration. However, the Premier League will be using a system more aligned with UEFA’s system in the Champions League.

More details about the offside technology to be used in the Premier League will be announced once contracts are signed, following extensive testing and analysis this season. This technology is already in use in Italy’s Serie A, where multiple cameras track player movements and record data points to create a 3D offside line using artificial intelligence. It is expected to reduce decision-making time by an average of around 30 seconds and improve confidence in offside calls.

While the semi-automated technology will be the primary method for making offside decisions, a manual system will be available as a backup in case of any failures. This move towards using advanced technology in officiating is aimed at enhancing the overall accuracy and efficiency of decision-making in the Premier League, making it more enjoyable for players and fans alike.
