Protecting Intellectual Property: A Vital Step Towards a Sustainable Future in the EU and Beyond

Celebrating World IP Day: Shaping our future through innovation and creativity

World IP Day serves as a reminder of the critical role intellectual property (IP) plays in advancing technology and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) both in the EU and worldwide. This year’s theme, focusing on the SDGs, emphasizes the significant impact of IP in guiding us towards a more just and sustainable future.

In November 2020, the EU launched an ambitious IP action plan to enhance protection and strengthen the single market, benefiting innovative businesses across Europe. A key milestone in EU IP policy was the implementation of the unitary patent system, which standardizes patent protection across member countries. The ‘patent package’ introduced in April 2023 aimed to improve transparency and efficiency within the patent framework.

Furthermore, new regulations have been put in place to protect geographical indication (GI) for craft and industrial products across Europe. GIs safeguard product authenticity by linking specific names with particular regions, such as Herend porcelain (HU) and Donegal tweed (IE). Updating EU design protection rules has promoted design excellence, innovation, competitiveness while ensuring fair competition in spare parts aftermarket.

The EU has also taken steps to combat counterfeiting by recommending measures outlined in its toolbox against counterfeiting. Companies can now employ these tools effectively to combat fake products and protect their IP rights.

On this World IP Day, we renew our commitment to fostering creativity and innovation as essential drivers of progress towards a sustainable future that benefits all members of society worldwide.
