Protecting Press Freedom: UK PM Rishi Sunak Honors Iranian Journalist Narges Mohammadi and Condemns Attack on Pouria Zeraati at Society of Editors Conference

UK Prime Minister Commends Two Iranians in advance of World Press Freedom Day.

During the Society of Editors 25th Anniversary Conference in London, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took the opportunity to recognize and honor individuals who have been standing up for freedom and democracy. Specifically, he paid tribute to Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate currently serving a 12-year prison sentence in Iran. Despite facing harsh punishments, Mohammadi continues to speak out against human rights abuses and oppressive laws in Iran, including the mandatory hijab rule.

Sunak also addressed the recent attack on Pouria Zeraati, a journalist at Iran International, who was stabbed outside his London home. Zeraati has faced multiple threats from Iranian intelligence targeting journalists at the news network. Sunak’s remarks highlighted the dangers faced by journalists around the world who work to uncover the truth and hold those in power accountable.

The prime minister’s comments were part of a wider discussion at the conference, which brought together industry professionals to discuss pressing issues in journalism today. Sunak emphasized the crucial role of the media in upholding democracy by shining a light on corruption, challenging authority, and amplifying diverse voices. He also expressed his support for organizations like Reporters Without Borders that are working tirelessly to protect journalists and promote press freedom worldwide.

Iran has a poor record when it comes to press freedom, with over 70 journalists arrested since the 2022 uprising. Among those detained were two women who first reported on the arrest and subsequent death of Mahsa Amini, a tragic event that sparked widespread protests in Iran. Despite the risks, journalists like Mohammadi and Zeraati continue to bravely push for change and advocate for a free and transparent society. Their courage is an inspiration to us all and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting press freedom for democracy to thrive.
