Pushing Through Adversity: Minnesota Athlete Sets Unofficial World Record in Muscle-Ups while Raising Awareness and Funds for Friend’s Memorial Foundation

In honor of his late friend, a man from Minnesota attempts to break the world record for muscle-ups

In Prior Lake, Minnesota, a new world record may have been set recently by Tyler Shilson. Shilson embarked on a journey of self-improvement with the goal of breaking a world record in muscle-ups while also raising money for a friend who had passed away.

Shilson and Curtis Lemair were both successful wrestlers in high school, but tragedy struck shortly after Lemair began wrestling in college. He passed away in his sleep due to an enlarged heart, leaving his family working to change athletic physical protocols and provide AEDs where needed.

Lemair’s father, Chad, expressed how important it was to him to have friends supporting him during such a difficult time and the impact it had on him. Shilson reached out to Lemair’s father with the idea of raising money for each muscle-up he completed. With this goal in mind, Shilson began his grueling mission on March 22nd.

As he pushed through the pain and fatigue, Shilson surpassed the current Guinness World Record for muscle-ups in a day with over 1,300 reps. However, just hours before final confirmation from Guinness, his body gave out and he had to rest. With some determination and rest, Shilson found a second wind and unofficially broke the record with hours to spare.

After achieving his goal, Shilson reflected on the experience and how it has changed his perspective on perseverance and tackling challenges. He hopes that his achievement will inspire others to push through difficult moments and realize their full potential.
