Quantum Field Theory Expert Ken Intriligator Joins the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

UC San Diego Professors elected as members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Kenneth Intriligator, a distinguished professor of Physics and holder of the Broida Chair, has been recognized as a new member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University and conducted postdoctoral research at Rutgers University before returning to UC San Diego as an associate professor. His research focuses on the theory of quantum fields, particularly developing symmetry-based methods to explore new aspects of quantum fields and their connections with mathematics.

Intriligator finds the concept of humans being ripples on an ocean of quantum fields that fill all of spacetime fascinating, believing that all matter and interactions, including people, are analogous to waves on this quantum “ocean.” More information about his research can be found in a recorded talk he delivered at the Aspen Physics Center. He expressed gratitude towards his mother, who is a space plasma physicist, among many other scientists, mentors, and collaborators who have influenced his career.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded on the principles that celebrate intellectual pursuits, the value of knowledge, and the belief that the arts and sciences are essential to the well-being and happiness of a free and virtuous population. For more information on Intriligator’s work or details about the academy’s 2024 announcement can be viewed on its website.
