Rare but Serious: IUD Migrates into Abdomen Causing Severe Complications in 72-Year-Old Woman

Woman retains IUD in her abdomen for four decades

A 72-year-old woman was admitted to Huu Nghi Hospital with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and mild fever. Upon examination, it was discovered that the cause of her symptoms was an abscess formed by the migration of her IUD into her abdomen.

Dr. Hoang Viet Dung, Head of General Surgery Department at Huu Nghi Hospital, shared that the patient had been experiencing increasing abdominal pain for some time without any initial suspicion of a problem. A CT scan revealed the unusual location of the contraceptive device in the abdominal cavity.

The IUD had been in place for over 40 years without any routine gynecological examinations. This case is rare as IUDs are known to move out of their original position over time without detection. However, if an IUD shifts out of place, it can lead to complications like menorrhagia and low back pain. In extreme cases, ectopic IUDs can result in serious complications if they migrate into the abdomen.

It is crucial to undergo regular check-ups with experienced doctors who specialize in gynecology to monitor the position and condition of your IUD. Depending on the severity of the issue, different treatment methods like endoscopic intervention or surgery may be required. It is essential to have your IUD placed by a reputable medical facility with an experienced healthcare provider and follow up with regular check-ups for hygiene and early detection of any issues.

While IUDs are effective and cost-efficient contraceptives, it’s essential to understand their potential risks and complications if not used properly or followed up regularly.
