Rattlers Rule: FAMU’s Football Team Prepares for Battle with Iconic Rattlesnake Mascot at the Center of Spring Training

Florida’s Best College Sports Mascot: FAMU Rattlers

Florida A&M University’s Rattlers football team is at the center of an ongoing spring quarterback battle as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Rattlers have high hopes for their offense, with LeBron James supplying uniforms and apparel for all Rattler teams. FAMU is the only Rattlers in NCAA Division I, with only two other college programs sharing the name in Division II and the NJCAA.

Last week, a poll was conducted to determine the best mascot name in Florida college sports, with Florida universities offering a variety of unique choices from the Gators to the Seminoles and even the Hatters. Over 6,700 responses were received, with Florida State University coming in third place and Miami Hurricanes in second place. However, it was Florida A&M University’s Rattlers who claimed the top spot with over half of all responses.

The history of the Rattler mascot dates back to 1891 when Highwood Plantation was relocated and became full of rattlesnakes. The resilient and gritty nature of the rattlesnake inspired FAMU students to choose this animal as their mascot. The iconic rattlesnake logo has become a symbol of pride for Florida A&M University and has helped them gain attention from big names like LeBron James.
