Nonprofit organization in the community honored as a ‘Hometown Health Hero’

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to public health, the Momentum Center was recently honored as a Hometown Health Hero. This accolade was part of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ 2024 Hometown Health Heroes Awards program, which highlights individuals and organizations that work tirelessly to improve the health of their local communities.

The MDHHS Director, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the efforts of those who are dedicated to improving the well-being of Michigan residents. The award ceremony in Lansing on April 10th recognized the achievements of the Momentum Center and its director, Barbara Lee VanHorssen.

As a nonprofit organization with locations in Grand Haven and Holland, the Momentum Center provides a welcoming space for individuals over the age of 11 with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. Members can participate in a variety of social and recreational activities, events, classes, meals, and interactions without fear of stigma or stereotypes.

Cindy Anderson from Grand Haven submitted the nomination for the Hometown Health Hero Award on behalf of the Momentum Center. Additionally, the Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health in their community.
