Regan Smith Breaks World Record in 100-Meter Backstroke at U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

22-year-old Regan Smith broke a world record in the Women’s 100m backstroke final at the U.S. Olympic Team Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, Indiana. She finished in an impressive 57.13 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by Australian Kaylee McKeown.

Smith first broke the record in 2019, but she struggled with the pressure and expectations that came with her success. She stepped back from the sport to rediscover her passion and turned professional, working with coach Bob Bowman in Arizona. Despite facing challenges like a brief illness, Smith continued to improve her times and set new records.

Her world record-breaking performance at the trials was not just a testament to her skill and dedication but also a reflection of her journey and growth since her early success as a teenage phenom. With her family cheering her on in the stands, Smith expressed joy and pride in her achievement.

Qualifying for her second Olympic team, Smith is excited to be back on the international stage and ready to compete at the highest level against rival Kaylee McKeown at the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
