In certain regions of Greece, forest fire vigilance has been raised to level 4, the second-highest level, according to the Greek government. Over the weekend, a total of 71 fires broke out in agricultural and forest areas across the country within a span of 12 hours, with most of them occurring in Crete and central Greece. In 2023, Greece faced its most devastating fires in 16 years, with about 174,773 hectares of land being engulfed in flames according to the European Earth observation program Copernicus.
