The Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Will Smith finalized a $140 million, 10-year contract on Wednesday, bringing the team’s total spending on five key players to nearly $1.4 billion since December. This new deal replaces an earlier agreement for $8.85 million over one year that was reached in January.
Will Smith had a strong performance in a two-game series against San Diego in Seoul, South Korea, last week, going 5 for 10 with two RBIs. In the previous year, Smith made his first appearance as an All-Star and finished the season with a .261 batting average, 19 home runs, and 76 RBIs.
Smith has been with the Dodgers for six seasons, boasting a .263 career batting average along with 91 home runs and 308 RBIs. He would have been eligible for free agency after the 2025 season if not for this new long-term contract.
The Dodgers have now locked in significant commitments to star players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Teoscar Hernández, and Smith, with a total investment of $1,365,687,500 across these five players.
