Record Security Aid Approved for Ukraine and Allies as House Overrides Trumpist Opposition

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approves aid package for Israel

The House of Representatives has approved a proposal to transfer 60.8 billion dollars in critical security aid to Ukraine, with 311 supporters against 112 opponents. Additionally, 8.1 billion dollars in security aid was approved for Taiwan and allies in the Indo-Pacific region, with 384 supporters to 34 opponents. A bill that includes measures in the field of national security, such as a ban on TikTok activity in the US if it does not break away from China, was also approved by a majority of 360 to 58.

The Senate had already approved a similar proposal two months ago, which included an allocation of 14 billion dollars for Israel, 60 billion dollars for Ukraine, and 5 billion dollars for aid to allies in the Indo-Pacific region. The vote in the Senate is expected to take place on Tuesday after the Passover holiday. It is anticipated that the proposal will be approved by a large majority and then sent to President Biden for signature, enabling the transfer of critical aid to Israel and Ukraine.

This shift in position by House Republican Chairman Mike Johnson came after weeks of pressure from members of his party’s extreme wing, including former President Donald Trump, who demanded that aid to Ukraine be contingent on stricter security measures on the southern border with Mexico. However, escalating Russian aggression against Ukraine led Johnson to change his stance and include humanitarian aid for Gaza as part of the proposal.
