Reducing electronic waste: Vodafone and the fight for a sustainable future.

Vodafone Aims to Address Redundant Devices in Eco-Friendly Initiative

In commemoration of World Earth Day, Vodafone Group has urged people to address the issue of redundant phones, which is estimated at 5 billion by the GSMA. The operator emphasized that choosing a recycled device over a new one could help avoid around 50kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions and lead to a 20% reduction in climate impact.

Vodafone is among several operators that have implemented recycling programs for mobile devices. In collaboration with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Vodafone aims to collect 1 million phones and increase the return of used models through various channels. The company also partners with organizations like Recommerce and its Vodafone Germany program, deemed one of the world’s largest mobile phone recycling initiatives, having already collected over 80 tonnes of electronic waste. Additionally, Vodafone promotes repair programs, with its Spanish unit having fixed 100,000 handsets in 2023.

World Earth Day, established in 1970, is dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging individuals to take action. The organization collaborates with over 150,000 partners to advocate for positive environmental change on a global scale. As part of their efforts to reduce electronic waste and promote sustainability, these partners include companies like Vodafone that are committed to implementing environmentally responsible practices and raising awareness about the importance of reducing electronic waste.
