Reinventing Democracy: Navigating the Impact of Technology on Political Participation

Bridging Democracy and Technology: Insights from the Berkman Klein Center

As we move into the 21st century, democratic values are facing significant challenges on a global scale. Rapidly advancing social technologies have stagnated democratic processes and it is crucial to re-legitimize governance practices in order to breathe new life into these values.

One of the main questions we face when designing democracy for the modern world is whether we should uphold democracy in a low-tech environment or adapt to the ever-changing technological landscape. How can we incorporate AI and social media into democratic institutions while still allowing for widespread online participation and deliberation?

Joining us for a discussion on the future of democracy and technology in our digital age are Lawrence Lessig, the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, and Claudia Chwalisz, Founder and CEO of DemocracyNext. The conversation will be moderated by RSM Employee Fellow Manon Revel. Together, they will explore the challenges and opportunities that arise when democracy meets technology, and consider what steps can be taken to ensure that democratic values remain strong in the face of technological advancement.

It is essential that we establish a common set of principles that are embraced by citizens in order to reimagine democratic institutions in a world dominated by AI and social media. We must find ways to incorporate these technologies into our democratic processes while still ensuring that they do not undermine the fundamental principles of democracy.

The discussion between Lessig, Chwalisz, and Revel will delve deep into these issues and offer insights on how we can navigate this new terrain. It promises to be an engaging conversation that will leave you with a greater understanding of the challenges facing democracy today.
