In 2022, an investigation was launched based on reports from the guarantor of detainees at the ‘Cesare Beccaria’ center in Milan. The probe uncovered evidence of violence against young inmates through footage captured by the center’s cameras. As a result, thirteen Italian Penitentiary Police officers were arrested and eight agents were suspended.
The officers are facing charges of injuries, complicity in crimes against minors, and attempted sexual violence. The General Secretary of the UILPA Penitentiary Police union, Gennarino De Fazio, expressed shock and disbelief at the allegations. He called for immediate reforms and a prison decree to address the systemic issues that may lead to violence and atrocities within prisons.
De Fazio also highlighted the high incidence of suicides among inmates and agents in Italian prisons, emphasizing the urgent need for change within the system. He stressed the importance of shedding light on what happened at the center and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
