Revolutionary Power-Saving Technology for AM Broadcasters: MDCL+

RedTech implements BE’s MDCL+ AM broadcast technology

Elenos Group, through its subsidiary Broadcast Electronics, has announced the launch of MDCL+, a revolutionary technology designed to drastically reduce energy costs for AM broadcasters. Compatible with both new and existing BE AM transmitters, MDCL+ is set to be showcased at the 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

MDCL+ harnesses modulation-dependent carrier-level algorithms to analyze modulation characteristics and adjust transmitter power accordingly. This adjustment can lead to significant power savings and reduced cooling costs, potentially enabling stations to save more than 50% on their electricity bills. For instance, a 10kW AM station in the US operating continuously at an average electricity rate of 20 cents per kilowatt-hour could see annual savings of over $12,000 with MDCL+. Stations in areas with higher electricity rates, such as Alaska and Hawaii, may experience even greater savings.

The system operates by dynamically lowering power during louder audio segments and increasing it during quieter moments, ensuring any increase in received noise is masked by the program content. MDCL+ can be installed on most BE transmitters in under 30 minutes with minimal adjustments required to audio processing to maintain audio quality while maximizing power savings. It is also compatible with other modern brands post-2000 but may require slightly longer installation time.

Rich Redmond, President and COO of Elenos Group, commented on the introduction of MDCL+: “We understand that all broadcasters are looking for ways to optimize their investments in infrastructure while keeping operating costs low without having to replace their entire transmitter system. MDCL+ was designed specifically to address these needs by providing a cost-effective and straightforward solution for upgrading existing equipment without major overhauls.” He added that the technology would help operators extend their investment lifecycle while simultaneously reducing costs.

Broadcast Electronics will be exhibiting at booth W3151 during the NAB Show.
