Revolutionizing Robotics: Boston Dynamics’ Atlas Continues to Push Boundaries with Upgraded Humanoid Robot

The adventurous life of the hydraulic robot Atlas: Falls, dances, and somersaults

In 2013, Boston Dynamics unveiled their first version of Atlas, a humanoid robot that captured the world’s attention with its somersaults, dances, and falls. Over the past decade, Atlas has been one of the first prototypes to revolutionize robotics with its ability to copy human movements and surprise many with its capabilities. Recently, a YouTube video showcased Atlas carrying out tasks, albeit with some difficulty and hits while running, jumping, and moving objects.

The development of Atlas began in 2009 when Boston Dynamics introduced their biped robot PETMAN in 2011. The success of Atlas led to a music video featuring humanoid robots Spot and Handle showcasing their dancing skills. Now, Atlas is being replaced with an updated electric version designed for real-world applications that aims to enhance capabilities and apply robotics and virtuality to help individuals with conditions like cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury or congenital problems.

The new humanoid robot demonstrated in the video presentation maintains its human-like features but with improvements in agility. This partnership with Hyundai highlights how technology can make a positive impact on people’s lives in various ways by enhancing capabilities and applying robotics and virtuality to help individuals with different conditions.
