Rise of New York Trainers Health Insurance Program: 64% Participation Rate and Substantial Savings for Trainers

Health Insurance Program for New York Trainers Gets a Boost

Since its inception in October 2021, the New York Trainers Health Insurance Program (NYTHIP) has experienced a steady increase in participation. Eligible trainers who compete on the New York Racing Association circuit throughout the year can join the program if they meet specific criteria, which include a minimum of 43 starts at NYRA tracks and a minimum of 60% of all starts being at NYRA tracks.

Originally proposed by the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and its lobbyists in 2020, the NYTHIP has gained traction since its pilot season, with just over 50% of eligible trainers participating. This number has since increased to 64% for the year 2024. NYTHA President Tina Marie Bond expressed her satisfaction with the program’s success, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that every eligible trainer considers this option for health insurance coverage.

The NYTHIP offers the equivalent of a silver-level healthcare plan to trainers, allowing them to submit their health expenditure receipts monthly for reimbursement. Trainer David Donk highlighted the significance of health insurance for him as a husband and father, emphasizing the substantial cost savings achieved through the program.
