Ukraine condemns Russian assault on its energy infrastructure

On Thursday morning, Ukrainian authorities announced that Russia had launched a massive attack on Ukraine, targeting its energy infrastructure across the country. Ukrainian Minister of Energy German Galushchenko confirmed the attacks on social media, stating that production facilities and transmission systems in regions such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Lviv were targeted.

DTEK, a Ukrainian energy supplier, reported that two of its thermal power plants were attacked. However, they did not specify the locations. According to the Ukrainian general staff’s daily report on Facebook, Moscow used cruise missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones to carry out the attack. Ukraine managed to destroy 37 out of the 40 drones launched against it.

In Kharkiv and its surrounding area, at least 10 strikes were carried out against essential infrastructure by Moscow. The mayor of Kharkiv warned of potential energy supply problems and announced the closure of the metro due to the attacks. Approximately 200,000 subscribers were left without electricity in the region as a result of the attacks.

The Kyiv region was also heavily attacked by combat drones and missiles, with the head of the local military administration confirming the targeting of a critical infrastructure installation.
