Sara Curtis Shatters World Junior Record in Short Course 50 Backstroke

At the National Youth Criteria competition in Italy, Sara Curtis set three new records in the short course meter 50 back event. Representing CS Roero, she achieved a time of 26.08 and broke the previous Italian, European Junior, and World Junior Record held by Olivia Smoliga in 2012.

Curtis’s improvement of .05 seconds was enough to break the previous record, which was held by Smoliga with a time of 26.12. Silvia Scalia had previously held the Italian record with a time of 26.18 in 2021, while Russia’s Maria Kameneva set the European Junior record in 2016 with a time of 26.15.

In addition to setting new records in the 50 back event, Curtis also won the 100 back event at the same competition with a time of 58.05, making her the only swimmer to go under a minute. When comparing times, it is clear that Curtis’s performance was exceptional as she beat her previous best time by .77 seconds and improved on all three previous records held by other swimmers.
