Science Bowl Unites Students and Volunteers from the Savannah River National Lab in Quest for STEM Excellence

SRS-sponsored Team Wins Spot in DOE’s National Science Bowl

More than 344,000 students have competed in the finals of the National Science Bowl over the years, and teams from across the United States must win one of the 65 regional tournaments in order to reach the national level. The primary objectives of SRS outreach programs are to increase students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), utilizing unique site resources to enhance education in the Central Savannah River Area.

One such SRS contractor that has been volunteering for over a decade is Connie Yung, an engineering recruiter for EM liquid waste contractor Savannah River Mission Completion. She has been serving as a moderator during the regional tournament held each year. As a moderator, she hopes to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM by supporting their passion for science and witnessing their energy and intensity as they answer challenging questions.

In addition to her role as a moderator, volunteers from multiple SRS contractors participate in various roles such as judges, scorekeepers, and timekeepers during the regional tournament. These volunteers help ensure that the competition runs smoothly and provides a fair platform for all participants. Their involvement is crucial in making this event successful every year.
