Scripps’ ION Acquires WNBA Rights Deal, Marking First Friday Night Studio Show for Women’s Soccer League

Scripps’ Investment in Women’s Sports Expected to Increase ION’s Growth

The ION broadcast network has secured rights deals for a new Friday-night WNBA game and Saturday-night doubleheaders from the National Women’s Soccer League, marking the first time that any network has dedicated weekly studio shows to the NWSL. In an effort to attract viewers and advertisers, Scripps is gearing up to sell commercial inventory for its next programming cycle.

Scripps acquired ION in 2020 with the goal of rebranding it as a destination for a wider audience. In addition to sports coverage, ION will continue to air popular hour-long dramas like “Bull,” “Magnum P.I.,” and “Blue Bloods.” The network will also air the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals and finals live on May 29 and 30. As part of its efforts to revitalize ION, Scripps plans to launch a year-long marketing campaign to promote the network’s entertainment and sports programming while also introducing dedicated franchise nights for the NWSL and WNBA.

This push to boost ION’s presence in the TV industry will continue through the fall season when new episodes of entertainment programming are set to air. By investing in women’s sports coverage and quality entertainment programming, Scripps hopes to secure a loyal viewership and attract advertisers looking to reach a diverse audience.
