A 100 kg turtle from Malaysia traveled to Con Dao to nest

A green sea turtle weighing nearly 100 kg and carrying a Malaysian tracking tag laid 108 eggs on Bay Canh island, Con Dao. The turtle dug a nest in the sandy beach of the island and completed the task at late night on April 22. Con Dao National Park rangers helped the turtle while assisting it in discovering its Malaysian tracking tag. According to a Con Dao National Park official, this turtle weighed between 90-100 kg and is about 40 years old.

Con Dao district is the primary breeding ground for 90% of sea turtles in Vietnam. From 2018 to 2023, more than 145,000 hatchlings will be hatched here and given tracking tags before being released into the sea. Among the seven recorded species of sea turtles are green turtles, big-headed turtles, flat shell turtles, tortoiseshells, leatherback turtles, pineapple tortoises, and Kemp’s ridley turtles. All seven species are listed in various conservation agreements to protect their populations.
