Marvin B. Figueroa named Keynote Speaker for College Degree Celebration

Marvin B. Figueroa, a seasoned Health and Human Services professional with extensive experience at the federal and state levels, has been invited to keynote the College of Public Health’s Degree Celebration on May 11 at Eagle Bank Arena. Drawing from his time at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Virginia’s Department of Health and Human Resources, and other notable positions, Figueroa will share insights with the next generation of leaders in the field.

Throughout his career, Figueroa has demonstrated a proven track record of leadership and strategic counsel in advancing health and human services priorities. As Chief of Staff to United States Senator Laphonza Butler, he played a crucial role in providing strategic counsel to advance health and human services priorities under the Biden-Harris Administration. Additionally, as Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, he continued to provide expert guidance on key policy issues related to healthcare reform and social justice initiatives.

Prior to his federal roles, Figueroa was Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources in Virginia under Governor Ralph S. Northam where he managed a consortium of health and social services agencies that impacted the lives of many Virginians. During his tenure, he contributed significantly to key healthcare legislation including those related to equity issues during the 2020 Virginia General Assembly session demonstrating his legislative acumen.

Figueroa’s experience extends beyond state government as well; he was also Senior Advisor to Senator Mark R. Warner in the U.S Senate where he provided expertise on Medicare, Medicaid
