Shreyas Iyer: From IPL Captain to Future Indian Cricket Captain

Potential India Captaincy Prospect Overlooked for T20 World Cup Spot: Not Hardik Pandya or Shubman Gill

During his time as chief selector, MSK Prasad noticed Shreyas Iyer’s impressive leadership abilities while leading India A to several series victories. He revealed that Iyer had been groomed for the captaincy role and was being considered a top contender for the post-Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Prasad mentioned that Iyer had caught the selectors’ eye with his maturing leadership skills while captaining Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. The franchise provided him with good team management and support, which helped him develop his leadership abilities further.

Despite not being on central contract with the BCCI and missing out on the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, Prasad expressed confidence that Iyer was on track to becoming a successful captain with investment from KKR and his evolving leadership abilities. He highlighted that Iyer had been groomed for the captaincy position and was considered a strong candidate for leading the Indian cricket team in the future.
