Spectra Logic Launches Cloud-Optimized Spectra Cube Tape Library for Cost-Effective Storage Solutions

Spectra Logic’s 30,000TB Tower Harnesses 70-Year-Old Technology: Data Tape Still Thrives in an AI-driven World with Massive Storage System Utilizing Thousands of LTO-9 Tapes

Spectra Logic has unveiled the Spectra Cube tape library, a cloud-optimized storage system designed for use in on-premise, hybrid cloud, and IaaS environments. The system is easy to deploy, scale dynamically, and service without the need for tools or downtime. It is managed by LumOS library management software that enables secure local and remote management and monitoring.

The Spectra Cube library supports LTO-6, LTO-7, LTO-8, and LTO-9 technology with plans to add support for LTO-10 in the future. Users can read tapes all the way back to LTO-4 with an LTO-6 tape drive. The library features high tape cartridge exchange performance and a TeraPack Access Port for simple tape handling. Drive interfaces include Fibre Channel and SAS. The Spectra Cube offers up to 30PB of native capacity and supports up to 16 partitions for shared or multi-tenant environments.

With a capacity-on-demand expansion model, users can enable additional tape slots and drives via software without downtime. This solution provides a more cost-effective storage option compared to public cloud options, with savings of up to 50% for cold storage. Additionally, it provides better data control and protection against threats like ransomware.

The price of a fully configured Spectra Cube library ranges from under $60,000 to over $500,000 depending on the configuration, number of tape drives, amount of media, and additional features added to the base library. Subscribe to the TechRadar Pro newsletter for the latest news
