Surfing Takes a New Wave with Riot Games President Ryan Crosby’s Appointment as CEO of the World Surf League

Former Riot Games Executive Named New CEO of World Surf League

Ryan Crosby, the president of publishing at Riot Games, has been appointed as the new CEO of the World Surf League (WSL) starting on May 13. Crosby, who joined Riot in 2021 after working at Activision, Netflix, and Hulu, will be responsible for expanding the league’s digital presence and promoting surfing stars.

In a statement, Crosby expressed his excitement about the new role and highlighted the unique aspects of surfing as both a competitive sport and a way of life. He aims to enhance the WSL brand, engage with fans and continue to develop the surfing community.

Crosby will also support reigning world champion Filipe Toledo during his mental health break from competition and help navigate through retirements of top surfers like Carissa Moore. The sudden departure of former CEO Erik Logan last June prompted the WSL ownership to take a more active role in league management.

The WSL recently announced partnerships with streaming service ESPN+ and sponsors like Bonsoy, Lexus, and Eventbrite. The season culminates in the WSL Finals in California in September. Crosby’s connections to surfing were highlighted by the WSL in their statement about his appointment. The recruitment process was supported by Nolan Partners.
