Surge in Enrollment: How the PACT Act Expanded Access to VA Health Care for Indiana Military Veterans

After Federal Law Expansion, Thousands of Hoosier Veterans Enroll in VA Health Care

The number of newly enrolled Indiana military veterans receiving Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care has surged by more than 37% in the past year. This significant increase can be attributed to the 2022 PACT Act, which broadened access to VA health care for veterans who were exposed to hazardous substances while serving in the military.

As a result of this legislation, 7,141 additional Hoosier veterans have enrolled in VA health care, with Indiana experiencing a higher rate of growth compared to the national average. The impact of the bill is evident in the enrollment numbers over the past year.

Both of Indiana’s U.S. senators supported the PACT Act, with U.S. Sen. Todd Young highlighting the importance of oversight to ensure that the VA remains capable of providing adequate care without being overwhelmed. To accomplish this, he emphasized that proper hiring practices and training are essential for maintaining an efficient workforce within the department.

In response to this legislation, the VA has hired over 61,000 employees nationwide last year, marking an all-time high in their workforce size. As a result, they are better equipped to handle an increased demand for services from veterans who require access to specialized medical care and support services due to their exposure to toxic substances during their service.
