Surviving the Holidays: The Rise in Emergency Cases at Viet Duc Hospital during the Holiday Season”.

Traffic accidents and alcohol account for half of emergency cases during holidays at Viet Duc hospital.

During the holiday season, Viet Duc Hospital received over 700 emergency cases, with more than 50% of them being related to accidents. The majority of these accidents were caused by traffic, and many involved alcohol. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoa, head of the Department of Digestive Surgery and on duty in the emergency room on May 1, stated that the number of patients visiting the emergency room doubled compared to normal days, with an average of 150 emergency cases each day.

Traffic accident injuries varied widely and included traumatic brain injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, broken limbs, and multiple injuries. For example, a 39-year-old male taxi driver was admitted to the hospital in a coma with multiple injuries after crashing into an electric pole on his way home from work. Another patient, a 42-year-old female, was hospitalized due to a traffic accident that resulted in a closed chest injury, grade 3 liver damage, and a wrist injury.

In addition to traffic accidents, many patients were also hospitalized due to daily life accidents and occupational accidents. Despite the decrease in traffic accidents compared to the previous holiday period, there were still 347 accidents nationwide during this year’s holiday season. According to data from the Ministry of Public Security, these accidents resulted in 138 deaths and 285 injuries.

To handle the increased patient load during the holiday season, Viet Duc Hospital organized an emergency surgery team consisting of at least 25-30 doctors and nurses. This team worked tirelessly around the clock to provide medical care for those who needed it most during this busy time of year.
